YAZOO CITY, Miss.–Flooding was reported across several Delta counties, with at least five inches of rain falling Wednesday. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported one person died because of the storms and in Grenada County, one person was hurt.
Other casualties may include crops. One Delta farmer pointed out in a Tweet from Sunflower County that soybeans law under several inches of water.
In Yazoo County the emergency manager and sheriff’s department were busy evacuating the Eastover subdivision near Yazoo City, Wednesday because of a levee breach along the Yazoo River. Another possible levee breach was happening at the same time along Hwy. 3.
While some areas of the state reported possible tornadoes and high winds, the damage in the Delta came mainly from water.
“”Hwy. 8 east is impassible near the bridge near Providence Rd. All traffic needs to find an alternate route,” read a posy from the Grenada County Sheriff’s Dept.
Gov. Tate Reeves reported 72 homes had been damaged across the state, including in Grenada, Warren and Yazoo counties in the Delta. The person who died was in Scott County, said Reeves.
Additional rainfall is possible Thursday before clearing in the afternoon, but no heavy rain is expected.
