CLEVELAND, Miss. — Authorities say no foul play is suspected in the death of a Delta State University student found on campus Monday morning.

The body of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, 21, of Grenada, Mississippi, was discovered by university staff, according to Delta State. Police and local law enforcement were immediately notified.
Bolivar County Coroner Randolph “Rudy” Seals Jr. said Reed was found unresponsive, hanging from a tree near campus. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8 a.m.

“Based on the preliminary examination, we can confirm that the deceased did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault,” Seals said in an official statement. “At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death.”
The body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for autopsy. Seals asked the community to remain patient as officials complete the investigation.
University President Dan Ennis expressed condolences, saying, “Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. I have spoken to Trey’s family and expressed our heartbreak.”

Delta State University Police Chief Michael Peeler said there is “no evidence of foul play and no ongoing threat to campus safety.” Multiple agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Police Department, and the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office, are assisting.
Counseling services are being offered through the O.W. Reily Counseling Center for students and through Human Resources for faculty and staff. The university also canceled classes and its Centennial events scheduled for Monday.

Local leaders shared condolences, including Mississippi State Rep. Robert L. Sanders of District 29.
“Our hearts are heavy today as we grieve alongside the Delta State University family and our community,” Sanders said. “We mourn the loss of a young life that was filled with promise and share in the sorrow of all who are touched by this tragedy.”

Sanders urged compassion and patience in the wake of the death, adding, “Even in the midst of grief, our community has the capacity to be a source of light, comfort, and healing.”
