MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — A Mound Bayou man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that left one person dead, authorities said.
Deputies were called around 6:28 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2026, to assist the Mound Bayou Police Department with a reported shooting at 501 N. Edwards Ave.
When deputies arrived, they found 26-year-old Kawanza Burns of Mound Bayou suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said 24-year-old Tommy Phillips, also of Mound Bayou, was arrested shortly after the incident. He has been charged with murder and is being held at the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility awaiting his initial court appearance.
