Tunica County Plans Housing Inventory as First Step Toward Quality of Life Improvements

TUNICA, Miss.–Just how many houses are available in Tunica County may be one of the pieces to a larger puzzle that if complete, could be a picture of a better quality of life in the county.
“I’ve heard of communities going one by one to each house and recording if it’s vacant or occupied and getting all that information<‘ said Alice Hollins, with Rural Placemaking, talking to the Board of Supervisors in a Zoom call. She is helping put together a strategic plan for the county to help improve quality of life.
The idea is to make life in the county better for residents and potential residents..
“The four areas that we worked on were workforce development, housing, broadband, as well as arts and entertainment and recreation, knowing how important those things are,” she said.
The project to take an inventory of housing in the county is what she classified as “low-hanging fruit”, meaning it is the most inexpensive project to the county to get the plan started.
Other projects will likely cost more money. But, the organization will work with the county to find grants and other sources of funding to keep taxpayers from footing the majority of the cost.
It was unclear when that inventory project may start.
