Tunica, Miss.–You’re being urged and reminded to check the back seat of your vehicle when you get out to make sure no kids or pets have been left inside. A heat advisory is in effect for the second day in the Delta, with an actual temperature expected at 101, and a heat index likely to exceed 110 degrees.
“Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and even adults,” read a Facebook post from the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office.
“Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The younger the child the more severe the effects because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate its internal temperature,” read the post.
The post also urged that if you see an unattended child in a hot car to call 911.
Monday’s temperature reached 100 or exceeded it in several Delta cities.
