City of Greenville to Resume Water Cutoff Operations After Moratorium Ends

GREENVILLE, Miss. — The City of Greenville will resume normal residential water cutoff operations effective Monday, Jan. 5, following the expiration of a temporary moratorium enacted earlier this year, city officials announced.

The moratorium was implemented in response to a federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funding lapse that affected thousands of families in Greenville and across Mississippi. Proposed by Mayor Errick D. Simmons and approved by the City Council, the measure temporarily halted residential water disconnections to ensure households maintained access to water during a period of financial hardship.

“With families facing extraordinary challenges, Greenville chose compassion,” Simmons said. “This temporary moratorium served its purpose—protecting public health and dignity during a critical moment. As conditions stabilize, we are transitioning back to normal cutoff operations while continuing to support residents who need assistance.”

With the moratorium’s expiration, standard residential water disconnection policies will again be enforced in accordance with city ordinances. Water bills remain due and payable, and residents with past-due balances are encouraged to contact the City of Greenville Water Department to make payments or arrange payment plans.

“Access to water is essential,” Simmons said. “Even as this temporary measure ends, our commitment to fairness, communication and community support continues.”

City officials urged residents who may be impacted by the resumption of cutoff operations to reach out to the water department as soon as possible to avoid service interruptions.
