CLARKSDALE, Miss. — City officials on Monday provided an update on road conditions, emergency shelter operations, and municipal services following recent winter weather.

In a statement posted to the city’s official Facebook page, officials said the Army National Guard, Clarksdale Public Works, and the Coahoma County Road Department began clearing ice and snow from residential streets at 7 a.m.

“While most main roads and thoroughfares are now clear, layers of ice and snow remain on many residential streets, including some that have already been bladed,” the city said in the statement.

Officials said temperatures are expected to reach 55 degrees, which should help accelerate melting efforts.
“We ask all residents to remain cautious while traveling,” the statement read. “Thank you for your patience and cooperation as this work continues.”

The city also reported that 14 individuals are currently being housed at the Clarksdale auditorium, which is serving as a warming center. According to the statement, the shelter is stocked with food through the end of the week, with additional donations provided by members of the Clarksdale and Oxford communities.

Court proceedings are scheduled to resume this week. Deputy Court Clerk Lynn Logan said court will be in session Tuesday, Feb. 3, and Thursday, Feb. 5.

Trash collection services remain temporarily suspended as road conditions are evaluated. Directors of Republic Services and City Trash Services are monitoring conditions to determine when pickup can safely resume, according to the city.

Officials also announced that four large Republic trash bins, one designated for each ward, have been ordered. Delivery is expected once road conditions improve.

The city said additional updates will be provided as conditions change.
