CLARKSDALE, Miss.–Two weeks after being sworn in as commissioners and mayor, the city leaders in Clarksdale have a better idea what problems they will be facing as a board. Monday was the first Board of Commissioners meeting with the new administration in place.
“I want to thank you guys that believed in me for me to take the city to another level,” said Ray Sykes, the commissioner of Ward 1. “I want to commend the previous commissioner for what he has done. I want to add to what he has done.”
But, the previous commissioner, Bo PLunk, and Sykes, as yet have unsettled business.
A special election will likely be held to determine again who the commissioner for that ward will be. Plunk challenged the close results of the election and last week it was decided that the best course of action is to have a new election.
The date for that has not yet been announced publicly.
Until that time, Sykes will continue to serve, having been sworn in June 30.
“One thing I knew is that we had problems in the city. But, once you get in there you realize…they become yours,” he said. “So, I plan to give 110 percent.”
