GREENWOOD, Miss.–The death of a 10-year-old girl from Greenwood on Memorial Day has state Sen. Derrick Simmons calling for more curfews in the Delta.

Zameria Jones, who was in the fifth grade, was shot in her car by people from two vehicles that pulled up alongside them. She died at the hospital.

Simmons said he believes curfews like the ones enacted in Greenville, Leland and Metcalfe, are a good measure to prevent violent crime.

“I am calling on all cities and towns across the Mississippi Delta to follow suit,” said Simmons in a prepared statement. “We can no longer wait until tragedy strikes to respond. Our children and communities deserve safe streets, peaceful summers, and a future free from fear.”
