CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University is expanding its academic offerings with the introduction of two new degree programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media and the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences. Both programs received approval from the Mississippi Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) during their November meeting and will begin in January 2025.

The BA in Digital Media is designed to prepare students for careers in the rapidly growing digital media and marketing sectors. The program will cover topics such as video production, social media content creation, web development, and digital storytelling. Dr. April Mondy, Interim Chair of the School of Management, Marketing, and Business Administration, said the program is in response to the increasing demand for digital marketing expertise.

“We’re focused on the interconnected elements of visual, audio, and written media in digital forms,” Mondy said. “This program will provide students with in-depth skills needed to succeed in any organization.”

The program’s curriculum includes foundational courses in digital media, electives in areas like animation and web design, and a capstone project that emphasizes real-world applications. Delta State is also offering a Digital Media minor that will complement degrees in fields such as Marketing, Art, and General Business.

In addition to the digital media program, Delta State is launching the BA in Humanities and Social Sciences, which allows students to combine two concentrations from English, History, Sociology, and African-American Studies. The customizable nature of the program is intended to provide students with a strong foundation in critical thinking, research, and communication skills.

Dr. Chuck Westmoreland, Interim Chair of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, said students will take a capstone course that includes a research project based on their chosen concentrations. Westmoreland also emphasized that the program will prepare graduates for a variety of career paths, including roles in education, government, and cultural organizations.

“These programs reflect our commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers,” said Delta State President Dr. Daniel J. Ennis. “We’re focused on meeting the needs of our students and ensuring they’re ready for the workforce.”
