CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, marking a century since the institution first opened its doors as Delta State Teachers College.
Founded in 1924 through legislation signed by Gov. Henry L. Whitfield, the college began classes in 1925 after Cleveland residents provided land and financial support. The community’s commitment and determination, university officials said, remain a cornerstone of the campus identity.
The centennial observance will honor Delta State’s origins as a teacher’s college, highlight its growth into a comprehensive university, and spotlight its continuing role in education, innovation and community service in the Mississippi Delta.
