The Greenville Fire Department has witnessed a stark increase in fire incidents, particularly those attributed to arson, compared to last year. Fire Chief Ruben Brown reported that for July alone, the department responded to more than 18 structure fires, of which ten were determined to be arson cases.
In contrast, the previous year recorded nine structure fires, with only one classified as arson. This troubling trend has raised concerns among local authorities and residents alike.
Chief Brown highlighted the impact of these fires on the community, neighborhoods, and the brave first responders who risk their lives daily. He stressed that the destruction caused by a burned structure extends beyond immediately visible, emphasizing that vacant or abandoned homes can lead to crime, safety issues, and the depreciation of the neighborhood’s value.
The motive behind the fire surge has prompted speculation, with Chief Brown pointing toward insurance fraud as a potential factor. He asserted, “When insurance fraud incidents rise, the burden is shared by everyone.”
Arson investigator Fredrick Birkley highlighted the situation, revealing that some properties have been intentionally set ablaze multiple times. Notably, one specific structure endured two separate arson attempts. While firefighters successfully battled the initial fire, saving the home, the second incident resulted in a devastating total loss.
Authorities urge the public to report any suspicions or information about arson promptly. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact 662-378-1616.
