Five Guards Fired from Holmes County Jail

LEXINGTON, Miss.–A jail guard shortage at the Holmes County Jail was caused by the firings of five guards, all of whom are accused of bringing contraband into the facility or allowing detainees to receive the contraband.
Sheriff Willie March told WJTV he personally arrested former guard Johnny McDaniel, 53, when he got a tip and caught McDaniel with a bag of weed inside the facility, which he was trying to conceal inside a potato chip bag. March said he could smell the pot.
He also had to let four other guards go who he says were also involved in similar activities.
The problem is compounded by the low wage offered, which is $11/hr.
