GREENVILLE, Miss. — Greenville police arrested a man Friday after a reported shooting in the area of Ashburn and Kirkland streets, aided by alerts from the city’s FLOCK Safety gunshot detection system and calls from residents.
According to the Greenville Police Department, officers received an alert from the FLOCK Safety Gunshot Detection System around 8 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, indicating multiple gunshots in the area. As officers responded, dispatchers also received several calls from citizens reporting that a Black male in a black SUV was firing a weapon.
Police said officers quickly located the vehicle and took the suspect into custody, bringing the incident to a swift conclusion. Authorities credited the combination of real-time gunshot detection technology and community reporting with helping officers make the arrest.
“This is one of many recent cases that FLOCK Safety has helped law enforcement solve since its inception,” police said in a statement.
Greenville Police Chief Marcus Turner said the technology has become an important resource for the department.
“FLOCK Safety has given our department another tool that will assist in solving crimes in our community and can substitute the disadvantages of current staffing issues that plague law enforcement today,” Turner said.
“We still ask the community that if you see something, say something. We all have a responsibility in keeping our community safe.”
Police identified the suspect as Johnny Robinson, 45, of Greenville. Robinson is being held at the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility and is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, along with several misdemeanor charges.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
