VICKSBURG, Miss.–Flooding has become enough of a concern in several places in the Delta that precautions are being taken to help protect property.
At the Arkabutla Lake dam, which has been under repair since early 2024 after a weakness was found in the structure, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is now monitoring it on a 24-hour basis. The lake feeds the Coldwater River, which is above flood stage.
The Corps has kept water levels low on purpose for dam repair.
At Steele Bayou, which is about 10 miles north of Vicksburg, the Corps closed the flood control structure Tuesday. It was reopened Wednesday to allow more water to flow out of the Yazoo River basin. The Corps anticipates closing it again.
“The safety of residents and communities remains the Corps’ number one priority as it continues to closely monitor the situation and support local flood-fighting activities. Other than possible issues traveling to and from the area, there are no other expected impacts to the Eagle Lake community at this time,” the Corps said in a prepared statement.
