MARKS, Miss.–The former city clerk of Marks has been arrested and ordered to pay back nearly $300,000. Pamela McNutt is charged with embezzling water and sewer funds, said State Auditor Shad White in a Thursday news release.
White said McNutt is accused of stealing the money between 2017 and 2021.
The embezzlement includes water and sewer payments, court fines and privilege and license fees, said the news release. When she was arrested, McNutt was ordered to pay back $282,714.58.
McNutt could get 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine, if convicted.
“When your investigators have good prosecutors to work with, we are able to stop public corruption together and send the message that there is zero tolerance for theft of public funds,” said White.
