LEXINGTON, Miss.–The former secretary for the Holmes County Soil and Water Conservation District won’t go to jail, but will spend five years on house arrest for embezzlement. Melissa Upchurch got her sentence this week, said State Auditor Shad White.
Upchurch was arrested last year, accused of depositing checks meant for the district into her own bank account.
She was also served with a demand letter to pay back $48,160.08.
White said the activity was going on from June 2020 to Sept. 2022.
In addition to house arrest, Upchurch will be on probation for five years and must pay fines
