WASHINGTON, DC (Ben Caxton) — America is seeing its highest unemployment since the Great Depression as businesses struggle with government shutdown owners. Mississippi processed fewer unemployment claims last week than the week before but the state is still seeing far more claims than usual. Since March 14th the state has processed over 201,000 claims for unemployment benefits with nearly 36,000 claims last week alone. Typically Mississippi receives less than 1000 unemployment claims per week. Over 440,000 new unemployment claims have been filed in Tennessee during the last seven weeks; the 43,000 new claims filed last week was the lowest number of new weekly claims since the week of March 21st.
