GREENVILLE, Miss.–Several public budget sessions have been planned by the Greenville City Council. Mayor Errick Simmons has encouraged people to attend, saying several weeks ago that the possibility exits the city will have to raise taxes to cover basic city services.
Simmons blamed federal and state budget cuts.
A special council meeting was held Monday afternoon with the budget on the agenda. The budget, though, will be decided on after a series of sessions and public hearings. Whether taxes are raised will depend on whether the city budget demands can be met with current revenues.
Budget sessions are planned for the rest of the week, each day at 10:30.
Another series of budget sessions is planned in August, with a public hearing on the budget scheduled for Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m., and the final adoption of the budget set tentatively for Sept. 2.
