GREENVILLE, Miss.–Three Greenville council members were sworn in for new terms Tuesday afternoon before a council meeting at Greenville City Hall.
Council members Al Brock of Ward 1, Lois Hawkins of Wad 2 and James Wilson, Sr., of Ward 6, all put their left hands on the Bible, raising their right to swear again to uphold the Mississippi and U.S. constitutions, but also to continue progress praised by Mayor Eric Simmons, who was also sworn in for a new term.
“I think the voters of the City of Greenville kept the same folks because they see progress,” said the city’s mayor beleaguered by crime. Simmons did not address several recent shootings, choosing to focus instead on business openings and the city’s economy.
“We are fogging ahead with progress with over $400 million in investments and the largest amount of store openings ever in the history of the city.”
Simmons acknowledged that the council of the largest city in the Delta doesn’t always get it right, but said they are seeking God’s guidance, with a goal of serving Him and the residents of the city.
