GREENVILLE, Miss.–The Greenville City Council and police chief want you to be aware of the dangers of crossing Hwy. 82. Several people have been hit lately, including a man who died last Tuesday (April 8), when trying to cross the busy highway.
“I would like to make mention of the number of people that’s been hot on Hwy. 82,” said Councilwoman Lois Hawkins, at Tuesday’s council meeting.
“I don’t know if there’s anything we can do about it. But, I do want the public to know that we are concerned about it,” she said.
Mayor Errick Simmons echoed her concern and asked Police Chief Marcus Turner to speak about it. He said the city is looking into whether lighting could be added by the city, perhaps in cooperation with the state, since it is a state highway.
A man was also hit and killed on Hwy. 1 over the weekend, in a hit and run incident.
Simmons said the highways are just that, highways and not neighborhoods, as he put it.
