GREENVILLE, Miss.–They’re tired of the tires. The Greenville city council heard from Public Works Director Jermaibne Thornton during this week’s regular meeting about the city spending money to get rid of tires and the stacks of tires along the streets that are there illegally.

“You may have ten stacks of tires down one street,” said Thornton, “and they’re putting four or five tires per stack.”
But, you should never see tires out in the open, according to the city’s tire ordinance.
“During hours the business is closed, no tires may be left outdoors unless in systems that totally protects the tires from the elements of weather and from the view of the public. Detached structures enclosing tires shall be structures designed for the purpose of such storage and structures approved by the city planning department, with the intention that all such structures meet the structural requirements of the city,” reads the ordinance.
City Planning and Zoning Director Carlon Williams said she is reviewing the ordinance to see what can be done.
“Our mission for the beginning of this year is tires,” she said. “We cannot catch them in the act…we’re gonna have to target the businesses.”
