GREENVILLE, Miss. — Robert Reed turned himself in to authorities Sept. 17 in connection with the death of Cleveland Smith following an August assault, according to the Greenville Police Department.
Reed arrived at the Greenville Police Department at approximately 8:32 a.m. and was taken into custody without incident on an outstanding felony warrant charging him with manslaughter, the department said.
The investigation began after officers responded to a report of damaged vehicle tires in the area of O’Hea and North streets during the early morning hours of Aug. 22.
A man was reportedly confronted and chased after allegedly being caught attempting to damage another tire. The individual was later transported to Delta Health for medical treatment.
As investigators continued reviewing the incident, they received information that Smith had been involved in an altercation during which he was beaten. Smith later died from injuries sustained in the assault, according to the department.
The investigation resulted in a felony warrant being issued for Reed on a manslaughter charge.
