Greenville Officials Explain Trash Pick-Up Delay

GREENVILLE, Miss.–If you live in Greenville and your trash is piling up, one of the main reasons is the age of the city’s trash trucks and their propensity to break down often.

“Everybody knows that the lifespan of those trash trucks should be between three and five years and the ones that we have are 16 years old,” said Public Works Director Jermaine Thornton at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
He said the problem is on-going and the city has been making piecemeal repairs.
“The parts are hard to get. Most of the time when they break down they’re very pricey to repair,” he said.
That leads to an unsightly problem that has only improved slightly over time, and that’s in some cases because trash collectors are working over time.
“It’s not a lot of trash on the street. But, it is taking them two weeks, sometimes three weeks to make it back to an area.”
The city has not come up with a long-term solution to the problem.
