Greenville Park Commission Significantly Increases Rental Fees

GREENVILLE, Miss.–The fees for events at Greenville parks are going up significantly and Mayor Errick Simmons has publicly opposed the decision by the Park Commission to raise the fees.
In a statement on the city Facebook page, Simmons said he is disturbed by the decision, even though he understands it has to do with recouping expenses for equipment and personnel.
“Our parks are meant to be accessible to all members of our community, regardless of income. These new rates create unnecessary barriers for many residents, especially families and individuals on fixed incomes,” read the Facebook post.
“As Mayor, I believe it is our duty to ensure that public spaces remain welcoming and affordable for everyone. I will be working closely with the Park Commission and other stakeholders to find a more equitable solution that balances the financial needs of park maintenance with the accessibility needs of our community,: said Simmons. “I urge the Park Commission to reconsider their decision and to engage in a transparent dialogue with the public about how we can best manage our beloved parks, recreation centers, and community centers in a way that serves all residents fairly.”
Simmons went as far as to encourage the public to attend the next Park Commission meeting to express dissatisfaction.
