Greenville Parks & Recreation Aiming to Eliminate Violence

GREENVILLE, Miss.–The hope is to get ahead of the violence. Greenville’s Parks and Rec director says her department will be trying to help kids learn to talk it out rather than fight it out over the summer.

“We are very concerned about the temperment in our city, especially with the youth and with the lack of skills for conflict resolution,” said Cassandra McMillan, at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
She says the plan is to create a program where kids are asked to think about a particular subject, think about it and discuss, with adults in the room. The goal is to help them practice thinking and discussing. She said they have already selected several subjects for discussion.
Homelessness is one of them.
“We ask the youth, how do you combat this? Can we do away with it? What can you do?”
She said an oratorical contest will be held in late May.
