Greenville Police Crack Down on Illegal Guns Amid Surge in Violence

GREENVILLE, Miss.–Just as Mayor Errick Simmons has noted before, Police Chief Marcus Turner said the police department will be looking for people who have guns illegally.
“If we can get the drugs and the gun we can also get some of these shootings to kinda cease,” said Turner at Greenville’s city council meeting Tuesday.
Greenville logged three murders over four days. Two men were shot and killed on South Broadway early Friday morning and another man was shot and killed on West Union St. Monday night.
Turner said one of the issues is patrolling hotspots for crime, which he said his department is doing. He said the Washington County Sheriff’s Dept. has agreed to help.
“We target those areas. These are pretty much the same areas we have on our target list. We have a target group of individuals that we are seeking after.”
As of Wednesday afternoon no arrests had been announced in the murders.
Turner said some employees of the police department also serve as federal agents, meaning federal charges can be brought, if the situation warrants.
