ROLLING FORK, Miss.–As people in Rolling Fork continue to rebuild from March’s EF4 tornado, a main route into the town from the south has been closed off. Hwy. 16 in Yazoo and Humphries counties is closed for an expected two years while the Mississippi Department of Transportation rebuilds three bridges.
The closure began Tuesday.
Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons, who was sworn in for a second term Tuesday, wanted to make sure people know the alternate route that’s been planned in Hwy. 3 in Yazoo County, “so that the general public will know that we’re not directing traffic onto county roads that are not capable of handling it.”
If you’re coming from the north another route could be Hwy. 14 through Anguilla or Hwy. 12 from Belzoni to Hollandale.
Meanwhile Northern District Transportation Commissioner John Caldwell was also sworn in during Tuesday’s ceremony. He is responsible for counties in the northern part of the Delta.
“They tell me that once you pull the trigger, that’s when the work starts,” said Caldwell, referring to his colleague’s hunting hobby. “Now’s when the work starts.”
