FRIARS POINT, Miss. — Authorities are investigating a pair of related shootings in Coahoma County that left one juvenile dead and a 2-year-old child injured.

According to the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after dark Sunday, March 22, to a reported shooting near 1600 Sheriff Ridge Road in Friars Point. While en route, deputies received an additional call reporting a second shooting on Friars Point–Highway 61 Road, where a vehicle carrying victims had crashed.

Officials said a 2-year-old child in that vehicle suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

Preliminary findings indicate multiple victims had been leaving a local park on Sheriff Ridge Road and were walking home when occupants of a black sedan opened fire. One juvenile, identified as Marterion Magsby, was fatally wounded. Another juvenile sustained injuries.

Authorities said a separate victim traveling on Friars Point–Highway 61 Road was also fired upon but was able to drive to safety.

The investigation remains active. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are assisting.

The sheriff’s office extended condolences to the family of Magsby and others affected.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office at 662-624-3081 or by email at [email protected]. Authorities said tips can be submitted anonymously, and a cash reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
