Last Man to Escape from Yazoo County Jail Captured

The message on the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page read “In custody”, above a picture of Gen Bassett’s face.  It was an announcement from Sheriff Jeremy “Bull” McCoy, that Bassett, the last of five men to escape the Yazoo County Jail March 24, had been captured.

McCoy offered no details Wednesday on the capture. But, relieved citizens didn’t mind sharing their jubilation in the comments section.

It was an early Sunday morning when a deputy pulled up to the jail and saw people in jail uniforms running back inside the facility. After a head count it was determined five detainees had flown the county coop.

One was captured immediately. Three others were caught over the next day in Yazoo and Humphreys counties. Only Bassett was able to remain free.

McCoy announced the next week that he had sacked four guards and they were being investigated for aiding in the escape.
