Man Rescued After Overnight Crash into Water-Filled Ditch Near Highway 61

A man was rescued after his vehicle overturned into a water-filled ditch along Jones Bayou Road near Highway 61, an incident first responders described as a near tragedy turned fortunate outcome.

Battalion One units were dispatched around 7 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle overturned in a ditch with a person trapped inside. Emergency medical services and law enforcement responded, and medical helicopters were placed on alert as crews prepared for a potentially critical rescue.

Fire officials said the vehicle had crashed during the overnight hours and was largely hidden from view. A passing motorist noticed the wreckage early Monday morning, slowed down and heard the trapped occupant calling for help. With assistance, the motorist was able to help the man out of the vehicle before emergency crews arrived.

Authorities said the victim had been trapped for several hours in icy water but survived the crash with relatively minor injuries. He was suffering from hypothermia and was treated at the scene before being transported by EMS to a local hospital for additional warming and evaluation.

Fire Chief Cummins arrived on scene within minutes, with the first fire apparatus responding in less than four minutes, officials said.

Emergency officials used the incident to remind drivers to take extra precautions when traveling at night in rural areas, including notifying someone of travel plans and remaining alert for motorists in distress.
Officials also emphasized the importance of public assistance during emergencies, noting that quick action by a passing motorist likely saved the man’s life.
