MOORHEAD, Miss. — Mississippi Delta Community College recognized student achievement during its annual Honors Day Ceremony on April 29.
Dr. Valarie Morgan, vice president of instruction and accreditation and provost, welcomed attendees and described the event as a celebration of academic excellence across the college.
The ceremony opened with the posting of the colors by campus police officers Willie Steele and Delfonzo Jones. Dr. Dannielle Taylor, dean of student services, delivered the invocation, led the Pledge of Allegiance and recognized special guests, including veterans, law enforcement officers and first responders.
Morgan outlined the awards presented during the program, noting that achievement awards recognize excellence within specific academic disciplines, while departmental awards represent the highest honor given by each department.
College President Dr. Steven Jones encouraged honorees to continue striving for success. The program also included a performance by the college choir, directed by Harvey Jackson, featuring the song “Stand By Me.”
Five students — Carson Allen, Allie Johnson, Ella McCain, James Avery Rodgers and X’Zaylah Yarbor — were inducted into the college’s 2026 Student Hall of Fame. Eligibility requires students to be sophomores with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5, completion of three consecutive semesters, and demonstrated leadership, service and character.
Department chairs and organization sponsors also presented achievement and departmental awards recognizing students’ accomplishments during the academic year.
The ceremony concluded with recognition of faculty and staff award recipients from the past year, as well as honors for retiring employees.
