JACKSON–A special session for the Mississippi legislature has not yet been called, but likely will be soon so lawmakers can finish making a state budget for the next fiscal year.
But, there is much more to be considered than when the legislature adjourned April 3.
“Obviously we have discovered significant changes by the (U.S.) Dept. of Education. They’ve cut $137 million since we left. Department of Health cut $120 million out of their budget,” said Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann Wednesday, in an interview with WTVA.
Hosemann said that may give lawmakers a better opportunity to craft a budget that more accurately reflects how much money state agencies which receive those federal dollars will have.
“So, it may be fortuitous to make sure we look at all the things that are happening from Washington that affect our budget.”
Gov. Reeves said the day after the legislature adjourned that if need be, the state can function without a budget. The fiscal year begins July 1.
