MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — Careful preparation and strong community cooperation helped the City of Mound Bayou avoid major power outages and widespread damage during the 2026 winter storm, city officials said.

Mayor Leighton Aldridge said the city’s proactive approach was shaped in part by lessons learned from the devastating 1994 ice storm. As a result of those preparations, no power outages were reported during the recent winter weather event.
To ensure continued water service, the city activated an alternate water well to maintain adequate pressure for residents. While officials noted that some temporary water discoloration could occur, they emphasized that overall service remained stable throughout the storm.

Major roadways were pre-treated with salt and other street treatments with assistance from neighboring communities, significantly reducing icy and impassable conditions. Reports of downed trees were minimal and largely limited to private property. City staff continue to monitor conditions and assess any remaining impacts.

Community support also played a key role in the city’s response. On Thursday, Aldridge, members of the City Board of Aldermen and local supporters distributed 250 hot meals — including burgers, fries and drinks — to children who were unable to attend school because of weather-related closures.

“We are very thankful for the citizens of Mound Bayou and our surrounding supportive neighbors for their assistance and support in helping keep our community safe during the winter storm,” Aldridge said. “Everyone accepted a role in looking out for their neighbors, and that cooperation truly helped Mound Bayou weather the storm.”

Aldridge credited the coordinated efforts of residents, city staff and elected officials for the city’s ability to navigate the winter weather with minimal disruption.
