MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — Leighton Aldridge, mayor of Mound Bayou, is urging unity and peace following a weekend shooting that left one young person dead and another injured.
In a statement released this week, Aldridge said the community has been “shaken by acts of violence” impacting its youth, describing them as “our most valued community youth.” He extended prayers and support to the victims, their families and others affected.
Aldridge noted that such violence has historically been rare in Mound Bayou but acknowledged the city is now facing challenges seen in communities nationwide. He emphasized the need for collective action to address the root causes of violence and prevent future incidents.
The mayor also praised local law enforcement for their efforts in the investigation and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
City officials, along with spiritual leaders and community members, plan to host a Peace Walk and Prayer on April 11 from 9:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event will begin at Mound Bayou City Hall and end at Taborian Hospital.
Organizers say the event is intended as a public show of unity and a step toward reducing gun violence in the community.
Aldridge is calling on residents, community leaders, organizations and young people to participate, encouraging continued involvement in efforts focused on healing and prevention.
