CLEVELAND, Miss.—You should be aware that the National Weather Service is conducting a state-wide tornado drill Wednesday, as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.
“It’ll be at 9:15 a.m. So, what we want everybody to do is to treat that alert like it’s a live tornado warning,” said Weather Service forecaster Chad Entremont. “Put your plan in place. If you’re at your home, your business, or your school, that’s a really good opportunity to go ahead and run a drill: where you would go, what you would need to do if a tornado warning were issued for your area.”
During Severe Weather Awareness Week, Entremont says the awareness is what it’s all about.
“Unfortunately where we are in the country we get a lot of severe weather,” he said. “You can never do enough practice. The more awareness about the hazards we see in terms of severe weather, the more you understand what you need to do, ultimately when you have that kind of awareness, you save property, you save lives and that’s what we’re aiming to do.”
Entremont said the peak for severe weather is in early to mid-April in Mississippi. But, it often gets going in late February and March.
