GREENWOOD, Miss. — A Greenwood police officer was shot and two others were injured late Monday night after an individual experiencing a mental health episode opened fire at an apartment complex, authorities said.
The Greenwood Police Department responded around 9 p.m. to a call on Cotton Street at Crest View Apartments to assist a Life Help patient, according to officials. During the response, the individual allegedly opened fire with an automatic assault rifle.
Officer May was struck in the shoulder. Officer Hollis and Lt. Newton sustained minor injuries, police said.
Officer May was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he received initial treatment, and was later transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Authorities said he underwent successful surgery Tuesday morning and is recovering.
Through coordinated efforts involving the Greenwood Police Department and assisting law enforcement agencies, the suspect was taken into custody without further injuries to officers or members of the public, officials said.
Police officials praised the response of officers and emphasized the unpredictable dangers faced by law enforcement. Authorities also asked the community to keep the injured officers and their families in their thoughts and prayers and expressed gratitude for the service of first responders.
The incident remains under investigation.
