LELAND, Miss.–A police incident report was released for the first time to the public from the morning last month when Kadarius Smith, 17, was killed during an interaction with Leland Police.
According to the report Smith was running from police when he ran out in front of a police SUV and was hit and killed. Police were on a call about people with guns.
The report represents the city’s side of the incident. The only other comment the city has made thus far is that there are no videos from that morning and that the police in Leland do not have either body cams on their person, nor dash cams in their patrol cars.
Smith’s mother, through attorney Ben Crump, has maintained that the department is guilty of negligence at the least. Crump insisted earlier this month at a news conference in Leland that there is video that should be turned over.
