WASHINGTON–The impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayoraks are wrong, says Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat who represents the Delta in Washington.
“Republican members of Congress, sworn to support and defend the Constitution, are ejecting the framers’ clear intent and over two centuries of precedent in favor of a sham impeachment,” he said, in a speech this week.
Thompson, the only Democratic representative in the Mississippi Congressional delegation, said he believes Republicans are trying to im[each Mayorkas for not enforcing the laws on immigration, which he said is neither high crime, nor misdemeanor, which are the only Constitutional reasons for impeachment.Republicans have faced the same criticism from people on their end of the political spectrum.
“He has not committed any impeachable offense,” said Thompson. “Rather, he has faithfully implemented the administration’s border policies, policies Republicans apparently disagree with.”
Republicans accuse Mayorkas of being responsible for record numbers of people coming into the country illegally.
