CLEVELAND, Miss.–Twelve hour days and decades of public service are the legacy of Rosie Simmons, the first African-American  circuit clerk of Bolivar County elected since Reconstruction.
Simmons, the mother of state Sen. Sarita Simmons, was honored Thursday by the state senate.
“I do pray that you all would treat others as well as you did me,” she told lawmakers, after acknowledging the honor, which she said she at first was reluctant to accept. “I guess I can’t say what I feel. So, I’m going to say thanks to each of you.”
Simmons was elected to the position in 1987.
