MERIGOLD, Miss.–Students who attend Hayes Cooper Center in Merigold, in Bolivar County, get one more day out of school. Classes resume Tuesday on the campus of Delta State University. An explosion and fire that happened Thursday morning at the school and injured two staff members has the building closed for now.
The state fire marshal’s office, ATF and Public Service Commission are still investigating the incident.
Meanwhile all after school activities for the rest of the year have been canceled.
A Venmo account has been established to help the two teachers who were hurt. A school supply drive is also being conducted, with a donation box in the lobby of the Ewing Building on the DSU campus. Needed supplies include crayons, Clorox wipes, copy paper, glues, scissors, Germ-X, tissue and childrens books.
