MOOREHEAD, Miss.–An upcoming trail ride in Moorehead was the subject of a protracted and at times tense discussion by the Sunflower County Board of Supervisors Monday. The anticipated number of people had some supes upset because of a previous decision to disallow the trail ride.
Monday’s decision was to allow a committee made up of the president of the board, the sheriff and other concerned parties to meet with the organizers to determine whether they would have enough security for a possible 2,500 people anticipated to attend.
“The sheriff told me last time it looked like there were ten thousand people out there,” said Supervisor Glen Dolnald, who made a failed motion to put a moratorium on all trail rides in the county.
“The highways are blocked. You’re messing with the safety of the people. Who’s gonna go out there and check the security. Nobody’s going out there and doing that!” said Donald.
At the last board meeting an alderperson from Moorehead asked the board to prevent the trail ride because of a shooting that had happened the previous week. She feared that a shortage of police officers and security made more violence likely.
Supervisor Riley Rice at Monday’s meeting expressed displeasure with the idea of preventing all such events.
“We just can’t prevent things from happening just because it happened in one place, you think it’s gonna happen somewhere else,” he said. “We need to talk to these people first.”
His concern was also that an application had been submitted on time and according to the specifications set out by the board.
