Tensions Boil Over in Senatobia as Police Chief Denied Reappointment

SENATOBIA, Miss.–The former police chief of Senatobia heavily criticized members of the Board of Alderman who voted against his reappointment last week, a decision which left the city without a police chief.

Richard Chandler said the ball got rolling with a personal issue between him and Alderman Chris McConnell.

Chandler said his son was dating McConnell’s daughter and took up residence at the McConnell house when he was grounded for doing badly on a test. Chandler said McConnell worked to undermine his relationship with his son, who has never returned home.

In a Facebook post, Chandler laid out the rest of what he believes went down.

“There was behind-the-scenes action and face-to-face dishonesty by Aldermen Garrett and Tanksley to make sure this did not happen. The latter two stated they had no problem reappointing me to my position, then voted no. Unfortunately, my mother, my family and half our police force had to sit through a meeting to ultimately be told I was not reappointed,” he said.

“These three “stand up” aldermen ran out the front door and left it to Mayor Graves – whom they lied to – to let me know I no longer had a job. When there is no trust or integrity among three aldermen sitting on that board, is it any wonder the Mayor said it would be a stormy four years? All of this was done without giving me an opportunity to speak about the police department or address any concerns they may have,” said Chandler.

Chandler also blamed his ex-wife and said he would not be answering any Facebook comments on the issue.
