TUNICA COUNTY, Miss.–A black hearse was followed by several patrol cars sounding sirens Wednesday morning. Inside the hearse was the body of Lenard Conway, former chief deputy for the Tunica County Sheriff’s Dept.

Conway’s death was announced by the department in a Facebook post Wednesday morning.
“Chief Conway retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 2022, at his retirement – he was the longest, full-time, certified deputy in the state of Mississippi,” read the post.
“He began his services with our department in 1992, where he served proudly for over 30 years. Although retired, Chief Conway stayed in touch these last two years with the department, once stating he was enjoying retirement but did miss being a part of the great team. We are surely going to miss him this side of Heaven and on our team.”

Conway retired from the Army a Master Sergeant.
