MERIGOLD, Miss.–The two people injured in Thursday morning’s explosion at Hayes Cooper Center in Merigold were staff members, said a statement from the Cleveland School District. It had been reported by a town official to Delta Radio that a student was hurt. That was not confirmed by the district.
The explosion, which the district referred to as a “tragic incident”, happened at 7:25 a.m. All students who were at the school were taken to the Merigold storm shelter and the buses that were on the way to the school were diverted to the Crawdad’s parking lot.
The district said the two staff members who were hurt were taken to Bolivar Medical center.
Several parents who were in the carpool line assisted once the incident happened.
School is not in session Friday. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, firearms and Explosives, along with the state fire marshal and the Public Service Commission are investigating to find the “root cause” of the happening, said the statement.
