Two-Vehicle Crash Injures Drivers at Highway 61 Intersection Near Merigold

MERIGOLD, Miss. — Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning at the three-way intersection of Highway 61 and Old Highway 61 near Merigold.

Battalion One units were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:15 a.m., marking the second accident responders have handled at that location this weekend.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy front-end damage to a minivan and severe damage to the driver’s side of a sedan. The driver of the minivan had exited the vehicle and appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the sedan was trapped in the back seat after the doors would not open and his legs became wedged between the front seats and center console. Firefighters removed the passenger side of the sedan and spread the seats to safely extricate the driver.

Although the sedan driver did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, Pafford EMS treated him aggressively at the scene and transported him to a medical facility as a precaution.
All responding units cleared the scene and returned to service by 8 a.m. The cause of the crash was not immediately released.
