INDIANOLA, Miss.–A vigil is being planned to remember the three people shot and killed outside of a downtown Indianola nightclub early Sunday. Police still have not announced any arrests.
Just before 1 a.m. Areon Butler, 19, a recent graduate of Gentry High School, and Cameron Butts and Marquette Baites of Greenville, were shot and killed and at least 16 other people hurt. The cause of the shooting still has not been pinpointed publicly by investigators.
“Please keep the families of the deceased and injured in your prayers. The City of Indianola plans to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of those who were killed and/or injured,” said Mayor Ken Featherstone in a prepared statement.
Errick Simmons, mayor of Greenville, and that city’s police chief, Marcus Turner, also said the violence in both cities is unacceptable, in a joint statement released Sunday night after a triple shooting in Greenville. Two of the victims in Indianola were from Greenville.
The site of the shooting, or at least the general area, was part of the area where several people were shot in a Memorial Day weekend incident that also included people hitting each other with bats.
