GREENVILLE, Miss.–Food pantries across Washington County are closing, according to Larry Lewis, Jr., whose father’s church runs a pantry and is trying to take up the slack.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors heard a request from Lewis, who asked for a continuing partnership from the board.
“Different pantries are closing and causing us to grow even faster,” he said. “We don’t have the capacity.”
Lewis said the House of Prayer Church of God in Christ pantry serves about 100 people across the county, including areas like Leland and Hollandale, in addition to Greenville. Some of the funding comes from the state, according to the pantry’s director.
“Can we partner with Washington County to help us sustain getting freezers and refrigerators,” asked Lewis.
The board agreed to a one-time donation of $5,000, with a request that the church come before the board before June 1, so the item can be worked into the county’s budget.
