What to Expect After you Apply for FEMA Assistance

SHARE NOW

Residents of Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, or Sharkey counties in Mississippi who were affected by the tornadoes on March 24-25 may be eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The agency can help with temporary lodging expenses, basic home repairs, or other essential disaster-related needs that are not covered by insurance.

To apply for assistance, there are several options available. You can go online to DisasterAssistance.gov, use the FEMA app for smartphones, or call 800-621-3362. If you use a relay service such as video relay or captioned telephone, make sure to provide the number for that service.

When applying for assistance, FEMA will ask for important information such as your current phone number, the address where you were staying during the disaster, your Social Security Number, a general list of damages and losses, and banking information if you choose direct deposit. It’s important to note that if you have homeowner or renter insurance, you should file a claim as soon as possible. FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. However, if your policy does not cover all of your expenses, you may still be eligible for assistance.
