Memphis, TN – The Cleveland Police Department and the Memphis Police Department have achieved a significant breakthrough in a crime investigation. The joint effort has resulted in the identification and indictment of suspects involved in a tragic shooting incident. Here are the key details of the case.
On the evening of Wednesday, March 15, 2023, law enforcement officers from the Raines Station responded to a shooting incident in the 4300 block of W. Faronia Square. The victim, identified as Kenneth Carter, was found lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention at the scene and his subsequent transport to the Regional One Health hospital, Carter tragically succumbed to his injuries.
A witness came forward, providing crucial information to investigators. According to her account, as she was walking from her car to her apartment, she heard Carter shouting at her, “Get back in your car!” She observed two masked suspects robbing Carter at gunpoint near his vehicle. Shockingly, the assailants shot him before fleeing the scene in his car.
Subsequent developments shed light on the suspects’ movements. The victim’s stolen vehicle was later discovered crashed in Clarksville, Mississippi. Surveillance footage revealed that the suspects had been dropped off at Faronia Square by a white Honda Accord. Through investigative work, authorities in Cleveland managed to locate the vehicle in question, which became a crucial piece of evidence in the case.
An investigator from the Cleveland Police Department made a significant breakthrough when he recognized one of the suspects in the surveillance video. Jamar Tanner, known to law enforcement from previous encounters, was identified as a primary suspect. Furthermore, investigators discovered that the victim’s wrecked car was found a short distance from Tanner’s address, linking him directly to the crime.
In a major development, the Shelby County Grand Jury indicted Jamar Tanner on Thursday, May 11, for First Degree Murder in the Perpetration of a Robbery, Especially Aggravated Robbery, and Carjacking. Additionally, Tanner’s alleged accomplice, Christopher Miller, also faced indictment by the same grand jury on the same charges.
Following the indictments, Jamar Tanner was extradited and is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail, awaiting legal proceedings. Christopher Miller remains in custody at the Bolivar County Jail in Mississippi, awaiting extradition to Memphis.
